Chinese Health Gem of the Month: De-Stressing for the Holidays

How time flies! In the wink of an eye, the Christmas season is right around the corner and upon us already. Besides this being an important religious season, it also represents one of the most commercialized times of year as well.

While Christmas is a joyful season, it also creates stress for many people. Decisions need to be made on what gifts to purchase for whom, whether there is enough money for these gifts, whose home to spend the holidays at and more. The season can also be stressful for those without family, who have lost a loved one, or who associate Christmas with unpleasant memories, loneliness and depression.

Here are some practical tips for how to cope with the fluctuating emotions that can bear down on anyone during the Christmas holiday season:

 

  1. Take slow walks and breathe deeply. Fresh air is beneficial for the lungs and for relieving both stress and sadness.
  2. Eat foods that are easy to digest. Often, stress can affect the gastrointestinal tract, impairing both the digestive and bowel movement processes.
  3. Attend a comedy show or meet up with friends and enjoy some old-fashioned laughter.
  4. Drink peppermint or chrysanthemum teas. These beverages are ideal for regulating the liver system which is affected by stress. Once the liver is impaired, you can exhibit various types of emotional imbalances such as depression, anger, irritability and anxiety.
  5. Visit a toy store and relive feelings and memories from your childhood. Experience those positive energies inside you again and remember what it was like to spend time in the toy store as a child.
  6. Avoid alcoholic drinks and sour foods. These will injure the liver which, as previously mentioned, is crucial in enabling you to manage emotions.
  7. Purchase a fish tank or visit an aquarium and spend time watching the fish swim.
  8. Meditate and practice Qi Gong, Tai Chi or Yoga to help the body to relax and the energy to flow smoothly.
  9. Spend time surrounded by nature. Immerse yourself in the outdoors and connect with the beauty surrounding you. This practice will help you become rooted and balanced.
  10. Avoid overeating and overdrinking or engaging in activities you will ultimately regret. These will only cause more stress and tension.
