Free Yoga Weekend at Garden of the Heart

Garden of the Heart Yoga Center is offering a weekend of free yoga classes on July 13-14 for all Sarasota residents and guests. Garden of the Heart Yoga Center is one of Sarasota’s original yoga schools, established in 2003 and founded by Betsey Downing. In 2011, Cheryl Chaffee purchased the yoga school, and has brought her own love of yoga and music to this community.

The focus of Garden of the Heart is alignment-based Hatha yoga, where the teachers provide individual attention, postural cues and detailed instruction, allowing students to have personalized attention and solid biomechanics. Focusing on alignment helps to improve posture, prevent injury, release habitual body patterns and create a free-flow of energy.

Instructors at Garden of the Heart also teach yoga philosophy, breathing techniques, meditation, chanting and more. Each class has a heart-felt theme, so students can transform their minds and hearts as much as their bodies. People of all ages, sizes, colors and fitness levels are welcome at Garden of the Heart Yoga.

The class schedule for July 13 is “Mixed Levels,” 9 a.m., taught by Amanda Hansell, “Basic Yoga,” 11 a.m., taught by Randall Buskirk, “Advanced Yoga” (for students and teachers with a strong practice), 1 p.m., taught by Jaye Martin, and “Gentle Yoga,” 3 p.m., taught by Harmony Ananda Joyce.

The class schedule for July 14 is “Meditation,” 8:30 a.m., taught by Stephen Gillum, “Mixed Levels,” 10 a.m., taught Cynthia Turner, “Beginner’s Yoga,” noon, taught by Maureen Gillum, “Intermediate Yoga,” 2 p.m., taught by Cheryl Chaffee, and “Restorative Yoga,” 4 p.m., taught by Eva Saunders.

A limited number of yoga mats and props are available, or students can bring their own. All classes will run for 75 minutes, so there will be ample time in between classes for students to ask questions and learn about the teachers and the community. Space is limited.
