Chinese Health Gem of the Month: The Supernatural Watermelon

 by Rene Ng, AP, L.Ac.

Watermelon, also known as “Shi Gua” in Chinese, is one of the most popular and powerful dietary herbs in China. Its health benefits are tremendous, and as Florida approaches its scorching months of summer, the watermelon can become your most important dietary ally against summer heat conditions. Its health benefits include the following

  • Hydration: Watermelon leeches out excess summer heat trapped in your body by expelling it from your body through urination.

  • Cardiac Function: Watermelon can benefit and strengthen your heart, while reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

  • Sleep Patterns: Watermelon can help address bouts of insomnia and restless sleep by calming the mind down.

  • Anti-Cancer: Watermelon contains properties that can assist in the fight against cancer.

  • Circulatory Function: Watermelon boosts your circulation, resulting in increased energy and enhanced immune health

  • Skeletal System: Watermelon can help to strengthen your bone density.

  • Skin Health: Watermelon can help to keep the skin moist and taut, and its yellowish grind can be used topically to address skin rashes.

As usual, if you experience health issues, it’s suggested that you contact your physician and have them addressed. The physician can also determine whether the consumption of certain foods, such as watermelon, can be beneficial or detrimental to your condition.
