Tai Chi Demonstration at Cosmic Center of Spiritual Light
On June 16, 2 p.m., the Cosmic Center of Spiritual Light will host a free Chen Tai Chi class and demonstration facilitated by Reuben Fernandez. Chen Tai Chi was developed in Chen village of Northern China first as a means of personal defense and later as a battlefield art, involving weapons such as the broadsword, straight sword, spear and halberd.
The main principle of Tai Chi is internal relaxation. Even though Tai Chi began as martial art, the villagers noticed the health benefits derived from the practice, and for this reason, Tai Chi is known as an internal martial art. Its power and energy do not depend on muscle power, strength or speed, but from the internal relaxation and release of Chi.
Fernandez began his study of martial arts as a teenager under Rusty Kanokogi in Brooklyn New York. In the following years, he dabbled in Aikido and various styles of Karate and Kung Fu until he encountered Chen Tai Chi Master Yan Gaofei in Hollywood, Florida. Fernandez’s study and practice of Chen Tai Chi and Chi Gung has been ongoing for the past 15 years. He began teaching in the Miami and Hallandale Beach area before relocating to Florida's West Coast. Presently, he instructs in Venice, Sarasota and Bradenton.
