Letter from the Publisher March 2018

Spring has bloomed once again, and here on the Suncoast, it’s the perfect time of year to embrace the Great Outdoors! Whether you’re kayaking through the mangroves, biking in a nature preserve or having a family picnic on the beach, it’s important to fuel these activities with proper nutrition, and that is the main focus of our March issue—healthy foods to keep you feeling vibrant and energetic all season. From upping your vitamin D intake to using “super spices” in your cooking to going global with fresh and wholesome ethnic cuisine, this month’s installment of Natural Awakenings is chock-full of ideas for eating your way to better health! 

 

Speaking of globally inspired flavors, there is much we can learn about nourishing our bodies from other cultures who place a high emphasis on food that comes from nature—not a drive-through line. This month’s feature article is on “Healthy Ethnic Cuisines” and offers insight on what different nationalities can teach us about nutrition. From Japanese to Vietnamese to Lebanese and more, this article explores how some of the healthiest countries use food as both a source of enjoyment and longevity.  

 

Next, our “Conscious Eating” article for this issue is bringing awareness to the benefits of “super spices” like turmeric, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, garlic and paprika. These ingredients are not only used for seasoning, they’re also nutrient powerhouses that can help fight inflammation, boost immunity and enhance your well-being from the inside out. And of course, with this season of sunshine on the horizon, we can’t overlook the importance vitamin D. Our “Healing Ways” article focuses on why getting enough of this nutrient is so vital, and how we can increase our vitamin D exposure through natural supplements and spending more time outside.
