Beauty Buzz: CBD for Your Skin
by Rhiannon Light, Licensed Esthetician at Point Lumineux
With all the CBD talk out there, let’s continue this discussion and learn how it affects skin health. When it comes to CBD, its anti-seizure, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties are what generate the most attention, but let’s not overlook the non-psychoactive cannabinoid’s potential to improve the health and appearance of skin, hair and nails when applied topically right onto the surface of our skin.
CBD is a compound that is naturally abundant in plants like hemp. Extracted from the plants stalks and seeds, hemp oil can be infused into topical body care products like balms, salves, lotions or even directly applied to skin. CBD itself is a powerful antioxidant, meaning it protects the skin from free radicals like UV rays, smoke, and environmental toxins or poisons. Free radicals lead to wrinkles and fine lines, but antioxidants help protect our skin from this damage and helps to slow the effects of aging.
Because cannabinoid receptors are located all throughout the skin and body, CBD has the capability to interact with those receptors which encourages homeostasis and healing. Studies have shown that CBD can help treat a wide variety of skin conditions.
Atopic dermatitis, also called eczema, has been shown to improve after treatment with hemp oil. CBD can help regulate the output of oils and sebum in the skin and inhibit skin cells’ lipid production, making it effective for preventing acne. A 2013 study published in the British Journal of Pharmacology found that CBD controls cell proliferation and differentiation, indicating it can be used in treatment efforts for skin diseases like allergies or cancer.

In addition to the health benefits of CBD, hemp oil contains an array of other essential nutrients including vitamins, minerals, proteins and fatty acids to encourage skin health. Vitamins A and D are responsible for skin repair to maintain its soft and supple texture. Like CBD, Vitamins C and E are antioxidants and protect the skin’s collagen and elastin against damage from the sun and free radicals. B complex vitamins serve as part of the construction process for skin, hair and nails to prevent dermatitis, hair loss and other skin conditions.
CBD applied topically to the area of concern allows it to work exactly where it’s needed, most in about 30 seconds for quicker and more focused efforts. Whereas ingesting CBD, which elicits total-body effects, can take as much as one or two hours before those effects are experienced. With all this information, do you think we would just leave you high and dry? Of course not—we have your CBD oil!
