Holistic Dentistry and Ozone Therapy
by Dr. Martina Mallery, DDS
At White Sands Dentistry, we are proud to offer ozone therapy as an effective modality for dental treatments. Ozone has a variety of applications in both the medical and dental fields, and is widely used as an alternative to toxic chemicals and pharmaceutical products to disinfect and treat disease.
Ozone is comprised of three oxygen atoms that have formed a dynamically unstable structure. This radical structure disrupts and inactivates bacteria, viruses and fungi, while stimulating oxygen metabolism and immune response in the human body. In a 2011 article titled “Ozone Therapy: A Clinical Review” published in the Journal of Natural Science, Biology and Medicine, the authors state, “Ozone therapy has been utilized and heavily studied for more than a century…its effects are proven, consistent, safe and with minimal and preventable side effects.”
At White Sands Dentistry, we utilize ozone in the form of ozonated water irrigation and ozone gas insufflation for the treatment of gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. We also utilize ozone in disinfecting surgical extraction sites and to stimulate healing response.
In restorative dentistry, we apply ozone gas to dentin after caries removal and prior to application of a filling material to help prevent nerve inflammation and post-operative sensitivity. In preventative dentistry, we utilize ozone gas as a safer alternative to resin sealants to disinfect and strengthen enamel pits and fissures in pediatric patients without disrupting the immature enamel matrix.
Likewise, early incipient carious lesions can be re-mineralized and reversed by ozone gas to eliminate a need for drilling out the decay. Another beneficial application is a periodic injection of ozone gas at the site of dental implants where chronic inflammatory response is often present.
Dr. Mallery, the owner of White Sands Dentistry, graduated in 2004 from University of Southern California School of Dentistry as a Doctor of Dental Surgery. She had been practicing mainstream dentistry until she opened her mind to the holistic-biological methods and concepts she came across in her private studies. As her independent research and interest in holistic-biological dentistry deepened, she began introducing these methods into her practice.
She became a member of International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine, and Holistic Dental Association. Due to her affiliation with these organizations, Dr. Mallery was able to access vast databases of primary research studies that present compelling scientific evidence that certain common materials and procedures have a potential for detrimental effect on the human body. Yet there are alternative methods that are non-toxic, safe and highly effective, an example of which is ozone therapy.
At White Sands Dentistry, we continuously research and expand our clinical protocols, and are excited to offer ozone therapy to our patients.
