Dog Beach Promoted on Longboat Key

Longboat Key residents and dog lovers Laurin Goldner and her husband have enjoyed many summer visits with family and friends on the mid-Atlantic coast. One of the highlights of those visits was the opportunity to walk and run with their dog, Max, on the beaches.
“I thought, ‘why not on Longboat?’ So I sent an email to one of the LBK Commissioners suggesting a designated dog beach area – something like what we saw up north – so people could walk their dogs on our beautiful coastline,” she said.
“Of course, everyone would be expected to pick up after the animals,” Goldner continued, “but in my research I haven’t found anything that suggests that is an issue. Twentyeight states have dog beaches, and Florida has 33.”
This campaign has become a heart-felt cause for Goldner. She developed a blog so people can support this issue and she can present their opinions to the Town of Longboat Key Commission. To date, the responses have been very positive, via traditional and social media as well as personal reactions. A similar campaign is being raised on Anna Maria Island.
“Yes, there are valid concerns, and those need to be taken very seriously,” she said, “but on the whole, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.”
