Choices Natural Market Opens in Venice

A new natural food store opened in Venice this summer. Choices Natural Market, 737 S. Tamiami Trail on the Island of Venice, offers an array of locally-grown produce, milk, cheese, cottage cheese, coffee, wheat grass and sprouts, to name just a few. Additionally, fresh honey is harvested right from the hives behind the shop, which also carries a large inventory of gluten-free products.
Proprietors Karen and Bob King, along with their son, Cody, recently relocated from the Chicago area where they owned a similar establishment. The Venice store is a complete renovation of an abandoned gas station, including not only the interior but also the exterior and sub-ground, and much of the two-acre spread. The result is a colorful, inviting store with ample parking and room to grow, dedicated to sustainable agriculture and life choices.
Karen King has several ideas for engaging the Venice-area community. A lending library of books and other resources is available just inside the front door. There are plans for a picnic area featuring live music, yoga on the lawn, worm composting, a water kiefer class, and more. Aspirations include a “Transitions Venice” community garden on the site, with raised beds for a hands-on organic farming experience.
Additionally, the Kings are working with graphic design students at the State College of Florida, Venice campus, to create designs for the windows. Customers will vote on the design of their choice, and the winner will receive a cash prize and the honor of having his or her artwork displayed as a window treatment in the store.
