It’s an amazing time for our community. There is so much positive energy in this new year that it is almost palpable. I’ve had some wonderful meetings concerning community events and organizations in the past few days, and you’ll find some of them in this edition of Natural Awakenings.
Foremost among these is the 3rd Annual Ecofest taking place in two locations in March and April. Inspired by Earth Day, this healthy living, healthy planet festival will kick off at the internationally known Warm Mineral Springs in North Port on March 17th and 18th. For this event only, Warm Mineral Springs will waive the normal daily admission fees of $15 to $20, allowing all of us to enjoy the festivities and the healing waters of the springs.
For those of you who have not visited our local natural wonder, Warm Mineral Springs is a naturally formed warm water mineral spring. Its temperature is a consistent 87 degrees year-round, the ideal temperature for soaking and swimming. Warm Mineral Springs’ water also has the highest mineral content in America and ranks as the third highest mineral content in the world! There are over 51 different minerals found in the rich water at Warm Mineral Springs, each one having its own unique health benefits. The minerals are absorbed naturally through your skin, helping to re-mineralize one’s body and promote health and healing.
Last year’s event was our first at this location and the turnout was amazing. This year we have added more entertainment, additional children’s activities, an outdoor concert, more health and green themed vendors, and a 5k run. Returning this year will be Ponce De Leon and his Conquistadors reenacting the discovery of the Fountain of Youth, and an attempt at the world’s largest drum circle.
I am especially proud to be involved in the formation of the first annual Fountain of Youth 5k, as running and triathlon have long been part of my athletic endeavors. I can’t think of a more fun way to spend the day than a scenic 5k run followed by a dip in the healing waters of the springs. Fun for the whole family all day long!

Another exciting happening in our community is the release of the Hip Clip coupon book at the end of February. Hip Clip is a community-based coupon book like no other. It is loaded with coupons and discounts at locally owned businesses. Not only does it stimulate the local economy by supporting locally owned and operated businesses, it also provides fundraising for local non-profit organizations. Up to 50 percent of all coupon book sales go to local non-profits. Projections are that this book will raise more than $100,000 for local non-profits in its first year.

See you at EcoFest 2012!
