The DaSilva Institute: A Journey to Natural Medicine

Guy DaSilva, MD, founded the DaSilva Institute in Sarasota’s Lakewood Ranch to redefine the rules of aging, reverse disease and restore optimum health in Saraosta residents. Trained for 20 years in conventional medicine (internal medicine, hematology, molecular diagnostic medicine, surgical pathology and cytopathology and laboratory medicine), Dr. DaSilva was confident that conventional medicine was the sole path to diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Then, when his wife, Tina, was in her early 40s, she became extremely ill. Disease hit home, and his faith in the conventional medicine approach was shaken.
“I couldn’t help her,” the doctor admitted, “and even after chasing ‘experts’ at the onset of each new symptom, the puzzle just deepened. She was diagnosed with everything from depression to rheumatoid arthritis to irritable bowel syndrome and Lyme’s disease, to fibromyalgia to chronic fatigue to premenstrual dysphoric disorder, plantar fasciitis and on and on. As the list got longer, of course the multitude of drugs to address the problems expanded.”
Frustrated and confused, and desperate for answers, Dr. DaSilva turned to a book published by the American Academy of Antiaging Medicine. “I was fascinated by natural therapies from peer reviewed medical journals, including orthomolecular medicine, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, and the power of squelching oxidants and inflammation in the body through nutrition, he explained. He returned to school for two years and became a Fellow in antiaging, regenerative and functional medicine.
“My wife became better as I applied what I had learned to her treatment, and I dug deeper into the biochemistry, molecular aspects and genetics behind each disease. I was again proud to be called a doctor, and, as a physician, it has been an extremely rewarding experience,” he stated. “Today, she is vibrant, healthy and active.”
What is Regenerative Medicine?: Dr. DaSilva explains: “Regenerative Medicine optimizes the body’s means for self-repair and adds proven and near future exogenous treatments and technologies. Adult stem cells appear to be our most powerful tool at this time. Current medical literature proves that adult stem cells exist in most tissues including brain, heart, muscles and liver. Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) and endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) in the bone marrow have plasticity to potentially transform and repair all tissues and organs.
“In the hormone optimization component of Anti-Aging Medicine we are already optimizing stem cells. Progesterone stimulates neural stem cells, testosterone stimulates muscle stem cells and EPCs which can improve erectile function, and growth hormone treatment for adult growth hormone deficiency improves the quantity and quality of EPCs. In the lifestyle component of Anti-Aging Medicine we optimize adult stem cells with exercise and control of glucose and insulin.”
How BioAge® Analysis Predicts Disease: Dr. DaSilva measures biochemical parameters in the body through biomarkers, and then determines a diagnosis, rather than eliciting information from a patient on the front end. His exclusive BioAge® Analysis goes beyond standard tests, and reads 200 biochemical markers of health and disease that cover 14 different medical specialties. These include, but are not limited to, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, cancer, thyroid disease, adrenal dysfunction, Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, hormonal imbalances, osteoporosis and arthritis, inflammation, oxidative damage, metabolic disorders and nutritional deficiencies.
The process can detect danger zones before they manifest into signs, symptoms and even disease. His objective is to bridge the gap between clinical and laboratory medicine, and to empower patients to take back their health with safe, natural proven therapies that allow them to get off prescription drugs and avoid surgery. His number one goal, he states, is to educate patients.
“Symptoms can be red herrings, often leading to misdiagnosis and unnecessary, long drawn out searches for the cause of the illness,” he explained. “Our process includes gene testing and genomics, functional stool profiles, intestinal permeability, heavy metal testing, organic acids, neurotransmitter measurements, adrenal gland hormones, tumor markers for early detection of cancer, and much more.
“In therapies, we utilize detoxification, IV chelation and nutrition, alternative cancer therapies including high dose IV Vitamin C, and other medically proven integrative medical therapies known to completely repair the body.”
He is candid in recognizing that the natural approach to antiaging and regenerative and functional medicine is not embraced by conventional medicine. “There is cynicism and skepticism about this approach to identifying, treating and maintaining a high quality of life for many years. Yes, drugs and surgery can save lives in an emergency, but they cannot prevent disease or promote health, well-being and longevity. And longevity doesn’t mean prolonging life to an unrealistically advanced age. Rather, it promotes successful aging – staying healthy and functional up the end of a long, productive life.”
About Dr. Guy DaSilva: The CEO and Medical Director of the DaSilva Institute of Antiaging, Regenerative and Functional Medicine, Dr. Guy DaSilva studied numerous medical specialties in New York and New England. He earned his medical degree at the Spartan Health Sciences University School of Medicine in the British West Indies. Dr. DaSilva then spent six years in formal residency and fellowship training, including two years in Antiaging, Functional and Regenerative Medicine, where he is one of only a few physicians with the title of Advanced Fellow, Diplomat and Board Certified by the American Board of Antiaging and Regenerative Medicine.
He served as assistant professor of Medicine and Pathology at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and was Director of Hematology and Hematopathology at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Later, he was appointed Director of Forcyte® Laboratory, one of the largest diagnostic facilities in the US responsible for developing biomarkers of early detection of cancer; and then became the CEO and Medical Director of HemePath Institute, an internationally recognized laboratory dedicated to diagnosing complex diseases and cancers of the bone marrow and lymphatic system.
