Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office Coordinates Dog Hoarding Rescue
In early May, the Animal Services Division of the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office was called to action in response to investigations of dog hoarding in a Venice neighborhood. Approximately 360 small dogs were removed from the home and placed with rescue organizations that willingly offered their assistance to Sarasota County Animal Services.
The dogs are available for adoption from Sarasota Humane Society, Disaster Animal Response Team, Sarasota In Defense of Animals, Almost Home, Florida Little Dog Rescue, Honor Sanctuary, Canine Castaways, Safe Haven, Suncoast Humane Society, Underdog Rescue, Florida Poodle Rescue, VIP Rescue, Kickapoo Rescue, Certified Preowned Dogs, Bay Road Animal Hospital and Ashton Animal Clinic.
Police say the animals were kept in a series of chicken coop-like structures outdoors. Most had severely matted fur, fleas, intestinal parasites and eye issues. All of the dogs needed to be medically evaluated, treated and/or cleared before they could be placed for adoption.
