Natural Horsemanship Camps for Youth
Mellow Run Equestrian Center is offering summer camps on natural horsemanship for kids ages 10 and up. The camps run from 9 am to 1 pm, and teach the practical aspects of horsemanship and an understanding of the nature of horses - with a strong focus on the relationship with them. Specifically, the camps teach young riders grooming, tack and tack-up, groundwork/handling, and riding – Western, English and bareback - and incorporate understanding horse and human energy, “freedom to flee”, and “becoming part of the herd”.
The benefits of equine activities on youth development are well known and numerous. In a study by the American Youth Horse Council and Pennsylvania State University, “a significant positive relationship was found between total horsemanship skills development and life skills development, relative to decision making, communication, goal setting, problem solving, and critical thinking”.
No experience is required. The cost of the camp is $140 and includes a final day camp cookout. Camp dates: July 9th – 18th and July 23rd – August 1st.
Mellow Run Equestrian Center is a non-profit horse rescue facility that rehabilitates/retrains horses from neglect, abuse, or abandonment, and shares them with the community at a reasonable cost. Other services include horseback riding, adult riding lessons, boarding and leasing horses.
