An Evening of Indian Classical Dance Performances

Aug 24, 2012 03:50PM

The Indian American Association of Manatee and Sarasota, in collaboration with SaiNritya Dance Group, will present classical dance performances on Saturday, August 25th at 7pm at The Players Theatre. Doors open at 6pm. The group will showcase the oldest dance form of southern India, Bharatnatyam. A guest artist for the evening will also be performing Odissi dances, another classical dance from the eastern Indian state of Orissa.
Bharatnatyam was nurtured in the temples of southern India some 2000 yearsago. The art was handed down as a living tradition from generation to generation. Today, it is a very popular dance form on the main stage worldwide. Adorned with gold jewelry, ankle bells and vivid colored silks, dancers use hand movements (mudras), facial expressions (abhinaya) and rhythmic foot work (nritya) set to classical music.
SaiNritya Dance Group has performed at the 2011 International Folk Festival, 2011 Indian Film Festival, 2011 and 2012 Relay for Life and fundraising events for Hindu Temple of Tampa.
The show will run for 90 minutes, and authentic Indian snacks will be available for purchase before the show -- catered by a local Indian restaurant.
