Doggie Bones Run Promises Fun for the Whole Family
Oct 04, 2012 05:02PM
The first annual Doggie Bones 5K Run will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. The event is very much like a four-ring circus, with multiple events happening almost simultaneously.
In the center ring, so to speak, is the feature event: the 5K run for adults and adults with strollers. The race will start at 5pm sharp. This is a chip-timed race with awards for the top three places in each age division. Age groups consist of from 14 and under, 15-19, then every five years to 80+.
At 5:05, get ready for the Doggie Bones 5K run, with the dogs wearing timing chips on their collars and their owners on a leash! First, second and third place awards will go the male and female winning doggies. This is only known race event in Florida where the dog wear the timing chip.
The one-mile fitness walk/run starts at 5:10pm. All walkers with or without pets will receive a unique Doggie Bones shirt and finishers’ ribbon. Doggies in both events receive their own performance doggie bandana.
Kids’ Monster Dashes begin at 4:20pm. Is it possible that kids could steal the thunder from the doggies? Possibly, with children divided into age groups from age three through 12. Three- and four-year-olds will run 100 meters (about the distance between home plate and first base on a baseball field); five- and six-year-olds will run 200 meters; seven- to nine-year olds run 400 meters, and the biggies, 10- to 12-year-olds run 800 meters. All of the children participating will receive a finishers’ medal, running bib and goodie bag, with winners receiving engraved trophies for first through third place in each age category. Area elementary schools’ art departments are holding competitions for students to draw an animal, any animal. The winning entries in kids’ shirts sizes S, M and L will be featured on those sized shirts.
Besides plenty of food and Pepsi products for purchase on site, there is also a Great Post Race Party with adult beverages available with proper ID, a Great Costume Contest with first, second and third prizes awarded for best costumed dogs, children and adults, Great Tech “Dry-fit” shirts for all 5K runners, Great Doggie Bandanas with Honor Animal Rescue’s logo, and much more. All of the food and beverages are complimentary to participants and their families!
Proceeds raised from this 1st Annual Doggie Bones event will benefit Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue, which saves the lives of homeless pets by changing the way the community views animal sheltering and shelter pets. Dari Oglesby, Honor’s Director, expressed the shelter’s gratitude to be part of the event and to benefit from its proceeds. “The Benderson Park development is going to be just amazing, and this event is a terrific way to introduce that to the community,” she said. “We’re so happy to be part of this, and welcome the opportunity to share our mission with the people of Sarasota, Bradenton and surrounding areas. Our dogs will be walking or racing in the event, so please come out and meet them personally and cheer them on!”
Event organizer Doug Schiller was effusive in his thanks to the many sponsors for this event. “We really appreciate Sarasota County allowing us to use Nathan Benderson Park as our venue for this event, and to the many other sponsors who are participating in an event that reflects the support of the community for family-oriented fitness activities as well as animal welfare,” he stated. Benderson Development is the Presenting Sponsor, and you’ll find their management team in lime-colored shirts cooking up BBQ on the grills. Whole Foods is sponsoring the Monster Dashes for the kids (complete with helping to judge the art for the t-shirts and providing a cupcake party for the winning artists’ classrooms). Other major sponsors as of press time include Natural Awakenings Magazine, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, Clark Road Animal Clinic, Fit2Run, Petco, Einstein Bagels, Dooty Free pet waste pickup, Faust’s Creative Fitness, MGA Insurance, Skinsmart Dermatology, Decorated Floors, Anna’s Deli, Pepsi/Tropicana, Freeman Orthodontics, Elements Therapeutics Massage, Paws in Paradise, and Johnson Printing.
