The 1st Annual Doggie Bones 5K Run/Walk and 5K with Doggies just completed on October 20, 2012 at Nathan Benderson Park attracted over 700 participants with their families. The event benefited Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue that saves the lives of homeless pets and provides a friendly family environment while pets are waiting to be adopted. The tremendous outpouring of runners and their pets was due to public service announcements, flyers, and in particular the articles that appeared in the Natural Awakenings and Natural Awakenings Pet publications.
This was the first known 5K run in the State of Florida that provided chip timing for dogs running in a 5K Doggie Run. Dogs of all shapes and sizes ran with their owners on a leash. At the end the doggies were treated to special doggie watering holes. Plus all of the dogs received a doggie bag with a home baked dog biscuit, bandana, and tennis ball.
The runners and walkers were treated to the T.G. Lee refreshments with the ‘Maggie the Cow’ towering 25’ high, plus BBQ, and adult refreshments. There were 145 children involved in the Kid’s Monster dashes for kids from 3 years to 12 years of age. All received crafted finisher medals for them to cherish. There was a costume contest for doggies, children, and adults with ugly prizes to all winners. This was a healthy family event with something for all. Many of the participants are putting this event on the calendar for next year!
