Feet, Posture and the Feldenkrais Method

Feet are designed to be the foundation on which to stand and thus a source of stability. At the same time feet are designed to propel an action forward and thus are a source of mobility. Posture and actions affect feet. Moshe Feldenkrais, D.Sc, judo master who held degrees in physics and mechanical engineering, felt the best way to become a student of one’s own everyday habits is to lie down out of gravity, on the floor, and bring awareness to old patterns. Awareness and attention while moving helps to quiet old patterns or beliefs about styles and allows posture and actions to emerge that can replace the old ways with more efficient patterns for standing or moving through one’s feet. Expanding subtle movement possibilities around the torso, hips and feet and ankles help participants discover new patterns for standing and moving with more lightness and comfort in one’s feet.
Bonnie Kissam, a Feldenkrais® Practitioner for 30 years, presents a workshop that demonstrates how feet affect our posture and posture affects our feet, along with a process that can make changes. “Moving From and Through your FEET” seminar will be held at Ionie’s, 1241 Fruitville Road in Sarasota, from 9:30am -5pm on February 24.
