April 2013

Mar 29, 2013 03:01PM

Greetings! It’s April in Southwest Florida and Natural Awakenings is celebrating all that is great about Spring with this special issue devoted to renewal and growth. We’re featuring articles on gardening to attract natural pollinators, tips on mental health for emotional renewal, spring cleaning and psyching up for marathons and outdoorsports.

Gail Griswold-Elwyn’s article on Domestic Detox on page 58 addresses some of the dangers of conventional household cleaners, and offers suggestions for organic alternatives. While spring cleaning is definitely a chore, it can also be cathartic, and these tips should help.

I know you’ll enjoy the comprehensive article by Linda Sechrist on Education for a More Sustainable World on page 54. Through interviews with several of the top professionals in the field, she explores the relevance of environmental issues on the quality of life, including economic and social issues. Recognizing the impact that educational processes can have on young minds, there’s a discussion on transformative versus informational learning to help expand children’s life experiences from an early age.

We’re entering the peak season for outdoor competitive events in south Florida, from triathlons to marathons, bike-a-thons and walk-a-thons. Many of these are held to raise money for worthy charities, and many participants are relative novices. Debra Melani’s article on page 70 on visualizing success will help amateur and seasoned athletes truly get their “head” in the game.

Of course, pets are not forgotten in this issue. Shawn Messonnier, DVM, discusses liver and adrenal issues in dogs and cats, with natural alternatives such as milk thistle suggested as treatment options.

We have a great Community Spotlight on the Gabriel Center, one of Sarasota’s most comprehensive healing practices. Learn more from Suzi Harkola about the people and therapies offered at this downtown gem on page 50.

And finally, April represents Earth Day to many of us. You’ll find a listing of nearby parks that are sponsoring special activities this month.

It’s the best time of the season. Enjoy!
