The theme for this month’s Natural Awakenings is “Inspired Living,” and as residents of Florida’s spectacular Sun Coast, it’s easy to feel inspired every day. June has to be one of the most beautiful months of the year here, and we are lucky to call this little slice of paradise “home.”
Our feature story focuses on finding happiness from the inside out. Judith Fertig offers tips on reaching into ourselves to find happiness, and also explores ways that color can influence and reflect our mood and our outlook on life. In fact, some health conditions are now being treated with different color LED lights. Infusing your favorite colors into your world can improve your outlook on life.
One way to find happiness is walking barefoot in freshly-mowed grass or the crystalline sands of our beaches, and Randy Kambic explains that the experience is also good for our physical well-being. In fact, a barefoot walk is great way to regain proper alignment and can help alleviate back and neck pain.
If spending time with your pet and working out fulfills you, why not do both together? While we’re not yet in the “dog days” of summer, Sandra Murphy shares some fun activities for people and their dogs to interact through exercise and training. By challenging your dog, whether running an obstacle course or pushing a ball through a hoop with his nose, you’re sharpening his skills and getting a good workout in at the same time. The exercise and quality time make for happy, healthy people and pets. It also can be a great bonding experience for children and adults.
I know you’ll enjoy our Community Spotlight article on fitness and fun in the water, written by our editor, Suzi Harkola. She’s touched on just a few options, Aqua Zumba, stand up paddleboarding (SUP) and open water swimming. I’ve enjoyed Zumba, and have been practicing my SUP as well as testing my swimming skills in the Gulf. Calming, relaxing, challenging and just plain fun – you can’t get much better than that!
You’ll want to make the most of summer’s bounty, and local Farmers Markets throughout Sarasota and Manatee Counties offer the best and freshest produce, herbs, honey, meats and flowers around. Take some tips from Claire O’Neil and her grilling skills to create unique, healthy and tasty dishes, perfect for an early summer supper.
June is also, of course, Father’s Day month. Clint Kelly’s article on dad and daughter interaction underscores the importance of a father’s role in helping shape girls’ self-image. And Armin Brott eloquently expresses the many ways fatherhood can define a man’s life.
Enjoy this issue, revel in the beautiful month of June, and take advantage of the many opportunities in our area for fun, fitness and personal growth.
