The Real Juice Bar: Your Destination for Transformation

Jul 01, 2013 07:47PM ● By Suzi Harkola

Belly up to The Real Juice Bar at The Open Studio in Englewood and step back in time to the simplicity of Old Florida. Sit at the counter, enjoy a delightful organic veggie or fruit concoction made before your eyes. Strike up a casual chat, relax and look through the expansive windows to the gardens behind. There may well be an artist next to you holding the most adorable and relaxed dog you’ve ever seen. The banter is easy and the vibe is really, really good.
This is The Real Juice Bar, part juice bar, part spa and part grocery store. Located on Old Englewood Road, far from the bustle of Englewood’s trendy Dearborn Street, the enclave of four or five vintage buildings quietly embraces a lifestyle where, as Kathryn says, “it all begins with food.”
Katherine Jouan began her exploration of health and wellness in her late teens, and has spent more than 30 years following this path through formal education, travel, research, and life experience. A licensed Massage Therapist and a Certified Integrative Health Coach through Duke Medicine, she is the founder of SimplyOrganix, a “live food” business that brings her passion for healthy food to the community. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling, earned a Certification in Plant Based Nutrition through Cornell University, and has studied Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction through Jon Kabat-Zinn/University of Massachusetts Medical School.
“I believe that formal education and conscious life experiences are of equal value,” Katherine says. “I strive to live my most authentic life, one of utmost health, vitality and joy. My intention is to share what I know and learn from all who would like to join me on an ever evolving journey to health.”
She has spent years learning about plant-based foods, and understands what’s good for the body. “I’ve been a vegan for decades,” she said, “and I’m passionate about helping people change their lives. Our place here is off the beaten path, and that’s deliberate. It’s the perfect venue. It’s pastoral, calm, comforting.”
Kathryn runs the Real Juice Bar with Sue Drummer. The team shares a love for their patrons, alluding to the “Cheers” mantra that “everybody knows your name.” “We are a bar, although without the hard stuff,” said Sue, “and we hear stories that are funny, sad, compelling and unforgettable.”
The Real Juice Bar serves organic fruit and vegetable juices, along with smoothies and wheatgrass shots. All of the microgreens, greens and wheat-grass are grown on the grounds, and only sprouted nuts and seeds are used, making all nutrients bio-available. The ingredients are all whole living foods, nothing is powdered or processed. The chalk-etched menu boards that casually hang above the bar change daily, based on local availability of fruits and vegetables, add to the quaint folksy charm of the place.
“We are very passionate about helping people change their lives,” said Kathryn,” and to that end we are constantly evolving. We offer an infra-red sauna in this building and yoga and massage in other areas of our operation. Hotels from Naples and other major metropolitan locations have turned to us to offer our spa and detoxification treatments, and we can provide juices for single or multiple cleansing treatments to their patrons.” She hinted that more expansion is in the works, including Mindful Menus, a series of Monday night eating courses that will provide a week’s worth of menus and food for healthy eating. ”We truly want to be a destination and an inspiration for transformation,” she said.
The Real Juice Bar offers local honey as well as juices that can be taken home and will hold their nutrient value for up to 72 hours. Additionally, the store is now offering Pearl Cream skin rejuvenation by Dr. Anna. Both Kathryn and Sue are using the product, and the results speak for themselves.
The Real Juice Bar is located at The Open Studio in Englewood, 380 Old Englewood Road. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 9am to 4pm. Call 941-474-4060 or visit for more information.
