July 2013

Ahh, July. Not yet the dog days of August on the Gulfcoast, and a perfect time to explore some of the healthy options our region provides. Could there possibly be a better time to savor local flavors, to explore some of the more adventurous exercise options, or to pursue the abundance of nature at our doorstep? I don’t think so.
In this issue of Natural Awakenings, we offer a range of exploration and enjoyment, and a big focus on healthy eating and living. From Bradenton to Fort Myers and beyond, the options are abundant and the rewards are plentiful.
CrossFit is a major part of my health regimen along with healthy eating, and that makes this issue especially exciting for me. One of our News Briefs this month announces the opening of CrossFit Bradenton, and their Open House on July 13. This is one of two “boxes” that I have been fortunate enough to have near me to train in. Crossfit Bradenton and Crossfit Lakewood Ranch have helped get me into great shape. Several articles about healthy eating are also included this month, to inspire and motivate, because you can’t be truly healthy without proper nutrition.
Melinda Hemmelgarn offers some important tips on eating safely, whether organic, from farmer’s markets or the grocery store. You’ll find her story especially helpful to avoiding genetically modified foods and those laced with pesticides. Her article on page 46 offers six ways to eat safe.
Judith Fertig, one of our favorite writers, comes on strong with Crazy, Sexy, Savvy, Yummy. She may well be a contestant on The Next Food Restaurant Star! Check out the recipe for Crazy Sexy Kale Salad, following her article that begins on page 60.
Our editor, Suzi Harkola, recently visited The Real Juice Bar in Englewood and experienced first-taste the toe-curling deliciousness of a fresh, organic vegetable juice that was literally made while she chatted casually with the owner, while watching the watering and gathering of the vegetables and sprouts in the garden. She will tell you that it’s worth the drive to this “off the beaten track” enclave of artistic and holistic healing specialists. Read more on page 42.
Bringing us right into summer, Ms. Harkola also offers some great ideas for workouts that feel more like fun than torture. From flying trapeze to flying through trees, read about some wacky workout ideas beginning on page 56.
Enjoy the 4th of July and the beginning of summer on the Suncoast. There’s a world of opportunity for adventure, life-changing opportunities and just plain fun waiting. Go for it!
With peace and love,
