December 2013

Dear Santa,

Between your busy schedule and ours, a whole year flew by, and we’re finally catching up with you. We have a few personal things on out holiday gift list, but we’ll post those to your Facebook page for your elves to review. We’d rather use this chance to ask you to please share some gift giving ideas with your vast network of good people everywhere.

It’s been a rough year, Santa, and you must be very sad to see the effects of the Earth’s warming climate. In this time of celebration, we’re sobered to think how difficult life has suddenly become for many in our human family. Millions lost their homes and possessions this past autumn, and their jobs literally blew away. Please ask everyone you meet to share their blessings with people just like them who are struggling to put their lives in order. Countless families are suffering in the aftermath of the Philippine typhoon. And let’s not forget the people in Haiti and Japan who are still recovering from their life-changing disasters that are out of the news, but still very real.

Santa, it’s easy for everyone to help. The SALVATION ARMY has a tornado fund: text STORM to 80888 to make a $10 donation, or donate online at Donate. SalvationArmyUSA.org/usc/2013-storms. United Way is accepting donations for those hard hit by tornados in the midwest at UnitedWay.org. A quick Google search will bring up more places accepting donations.

For broader disaster relief to U.S. tornados and Typhoon Haiyan victims, the AMERICAN RED CROSS is accepting $10 text donations to 90999 by texting REDCROSS. Or consider a direct typhoon aid donation to CARE at Care.org, to the PHILIPPINE RED CROSS or to any number of local groups. And Santa, please remind everyone to do a little research at CharityNavigator.org before sending money to lesser-known organizations.

The holidays are also a time of joy, and we want to share our uplifting December issue with you, Santa. We’re leaving you a few copies of Natural Awakenings next to your organic green juice and flaxseed crackers. Please give a copy to Mrs. Claus, because we know she’ll enjoy our Conscious Eating section, which includes lots of yummy recipes for the holidays.

One final thought for you, Santa. If, while making your rounds this year, you find you’re missing a few gifts for all the good girls and boys, please be sure to visit our Natural Awakenings advertisers and distributors. They’ll help you find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. And to continue your support of local business owners and employees here in Sarasota and Manatee counties, please refer to the wonderful offers in our Holiday Gift Guide on pages 48-50.

We wish you a peaceful and magical holiday season, and a world of happiness in 2014!
