Stress is part of our everyday lives, especially in the fast pace of modern times! Yoga helps detach the mind from anxiety and brings equilibrium to the mind/body connection. The breath can be moved rhythmically with a controlled sustained soft sound, just as the ocean undulates with its ebb and fl ow. This can calm the mind. When one focuses on the inhalation and exhalation of the breath, a feeling of peace and tranquility can be achieved. When the body is relaxed, the mind becomes serene. Yoga at The Power of One is designed to alleviate stress.
Debbie Downing, owner of Sunlight Yoga at The Power of One, states that stress reduction is a key benefi t of yoga. “One of the best ways to reduce stress is feeling free to practice the poses in a challenging but comfortable way that suits your individual body,” she says. “You can adapt any pose by using props, such as straps, mats, blocks, and balls, for modifi cation. This will then require less effort, simultaneously extending and relaxing the body with ease. Props allow practitioner to experience the full benefi t of the pose without risk of strain or injury.”
Downing reminds her students to sense the body, relax and have fun. “Yoga also improves the functioning of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems,” she explains. “It can be a welcome relief for women in menopause. The therapeutic effects can benefi t anyone regardless of age or gender.”
