Embracing Our Differences has been honored with The President’s Volunteer Service Award, one of the highest federal recognitions an organization can receive, for its ongoing commitment to volunteerism and civic engagement.
The award was issued on behalf of President Obama. It acknowledges Embracing Our Differences’ sustained commitment to civic participation and engaging volunteers in the service of promoting diversity.
The President’s Volunteer Service Award is issued by Points of Light Institute and the Corporation for National and Community Service on behalf of the President of the United States, to recognize the best in American spirit and to encourage all Americans to improve their communities through volunteer service and civic participation. The award is presented to individuals, families and groups that have demonstrated outstanding volunteer service and civic participation over the course of a 12-month period.
The organization’s website explains: “Embracing Our Differences believes that diversity is one of the world’s greatest assets. To realize the promise of diversity, we must ensure that everyone is respected, included and valued for their individuality. Our goal is to create a community where diversity and inclusion are honored while teaching the importance of being an ‘up-stander,’ not a ‘by- stander.’”
The centerpiece of Embracing Our Differences is an outdoor juried international art exhibit featuring 39 billboard size images created by local, national and international artists, writers and students reflecting their interpretations of the theme “enriching lives through diversity.” The exhibits were held this spring at Sarasota’s downtown Island Park and Bradenton’s Riverwalk.
