Southeastern Guide Dogs Named “Tampa Bay’s Non-profit of the Year”

Jul 01, 2014 03:05AM

Certified dog trainers have been working with potential guide dogs at Southeastern Guide Dogs’ new Keith G. Hirst Canine Assessment Center, the nonprofit’s “freshman dorm” where puppies who are returning from volunteer puppy-raiser homes are assessed for temperament, health and suitability for guide dog work.

In the center, trainers observe the dogs’ responses to a variety of stimuli. A couple of dozen dogs are involved in a group assessment, then evaluated individually.

The dogs spend about a month in the Canine Assessment Center before moving to training kennel to continue formal guide dog harness training.

Southeastern Guide Dogs was named Overall Nonprofit of the Year for 2014 by the Tampa Bay Business Journal.
