Local Dance Fitness Teacher Creates Her Own Brand of Movement
Jul 01, 2014 03:05AM
Kelly Atkins, formerly the pioneer of bringing Nia ( a similar yet distinctly different kind of movement class) to Sarasota, has created her own brand of healing movement called "Kai." Kai in Hawaiian means "ocean" and in Japanese means "circle", in Swahili it means "loveable"- all qualities Atkins has included into the work she calls Kai.
After observing her students through the years and seeing a need for more natural movements and more space for students to adapt and explore, as well as a desire to combine her education and experience, Kai was created in January of 2013.
Atkins studied physical therapy and completed her degree in Health and Wellness in 1999. A certified ACE personal trainer and fitness instructor since 1987, also she's studied Yoga, Pilates, and Reiki Level 3 and has partnered with www.dana.org for the last seven years presenting workshops on integrating the brain and movement.
Kai blends 21 simple natural movements (think grab, poke, throw....movements she observed her children did while growing) with authentic movement. The premise of each class is a barefoot workout that feels great on the joints yet is highly adaptable to both men and women and stimulates all the different parts of the brain. Classes are held daily at Saradance.
She also offers “Immersions” for those interested in going deeper into the work that are aligned with the Elements of Earth, Water, Fire and Air. Upcoming Water Immersion is for those interested in teaching the work or for personal enrichment will be held July 18 through 22 with more dates for Earth Immersions set for August, October and November. See the website for exact dates and times.
Kai classes are being offered in Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale and Dunnedin, Florida, and over 30 people have completed the trainings so far with graduates in California, Texas, NY, and in the countries of Turkey and Russia. Kelly would like to share this healing and transformational work with the world, and support others in building up successful classes and earn money doing what they love while helping to heal self and others.
