August 2014 Publisher Letter: Dog Days of Summer?
August is often called the “Dog Days of Summer” month, usually in a negative way. However, to me – a person, who loves dogs and animals of all kinds (well, maybe not snakes!) – these are positive days that reflect and warm the rest of the year with relaxation, playfulness, unbridled pleasure and joy – just like my dog, Sophie, a five-pound toy Yorkie!
I think of summer – August especially – as a yin and yang time. Yes, it’s hot, but the rat race continues. These contradictions are clear, but they reinforce the power within us all. Balance is essential in life – whether it be work, personal time, exercise or diet. Natural Awakenings, especially this month, strives to bring you articles and bits of information that will help you achieve just that.
You’ll find a virtual vacation in this issue. Let the articles take your imagination soaring. Embrace a mantra, post a personal feeling on Facebook or Twitter, call a family member you haven’t seen in a while, walk on the beach, eat real food, don’t judge yourself, power down your phone, seek out a great yoga or pilates studio, book a room at a nearby hotel, give thanks, let go and practice the serenity prayer – whatever helps you escape the tedium of day-to-day life.
