Expressive Arts Symposiums Slated for Sarasota

Feb 27, 2015 11:34PM

“Engaging the Collective Imagination,” a weekend expressive arts symposium, will take place at the Holiday Inn Sarasota/Bradenton Airport from March 6 through 8, 2015.  Co-sponsored by Expressive Arts Florida Institute and the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association (IEATA), the symposium features expressive arts pioneers Pat B. Allen, Sally Atkins (pictured) and Harold McKinney with two full-day workshops of art, movement, music, drama and more.
A Friday night stand-alone community event, “A Medley of Inspiration, Performance and Participation,” includes a book-signing, collaborative art making and an inspiring medley of music, poetry, art, presentation and audience participation. Additional presenters for the evening include Expressive Arts Florida Institute faculty and Authentic Voicework founder, soprano Stephanie Heidemann. The evening opens with a “meet and greet” and refreshments.
The cost for Friday night alone is $40 (IEATA members and students, $30).  Saturday and Sunday together is $415 (IEATA members and students, $395) and the entire weekend, Friday-Sunday, is $445 (IEATA members $415). There is an optional $20 networking social on Saturday evening.

On March 13, 20 and 27, from 9 a.m. to noon, experience “Art as a Healing Practice” with Kathleen Horne. An expressive arts process that embraces the positive power of creative work/play to change lives, the series consists of a gentle and powerful blend of guided meditation, visual art, writing and sharing/witnessing. Cost is $40 and will be held at Expressive Arts Florida Institute, 200 S Washington Blvd, Suite 1, Sarasota. To register, call 941-366-9595 or visit ExpressiveArtsFlorida.com.

On March 18, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., learn to “Paint it Your Way” with core faculty members Victoria Domenichello-Anderson and Tamara Teeter Knapp. This session is crafted for those who would love to try painting, those who don’t get to paint often enough, and those who paint but would like to find some new inspiration. No experience needed. Cost is $30. Held at Expressive Arts Florida Institute, 200 S Washington Blvd, Suite 1, Sarasota; to register, call 941-366-9595 or visit ExpressiveArtsFlorida.com.

March 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., enjoy “Creative Bookmaking” with Tamara Teeter Knapp and Victoria Domenichello-Anderson. Take home a completed handmade book from your own painting. All supplies included, no experience needed. Cost is $95.

The creativity continues on March 28, from 2 to 4:30 p.m., at “Mandala Club” with Kathleen Horne, co-founder and core faculty of Expressive Arts Florida Institute. Explore the “sacred circles,” a primal pattern in nature found in a wide variety of spiritual traditions across cultures. Cost is $30.
