Earth Day, an annual event to raise awareness for worldwide environmental protection, will be coming up on April 22, and numerous local establishments have “gone green” in order to demonstrate their support of a healthier, safer, less contaminated planet.
One business in particular, Green World Home Cleaning, is taking a stand against harmful chemicals permeating the air we regularly breathe. Having operated in the Sarasota-Bradenton area since 2006, this professional cleaning service remains committed to providing sparkling, non-toxic surfaces, thus improving the quality of life for homeowners. In fact, Green World Home Cleaning uses only premium-grade, natural household products, which have been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
To gain further insight into this company’s passionate pursuit of environmentally-conscious business practices, I spoke with the owner, Peter Newton, who eagerly shares his thoughts, below, on how natural sanitation contributes to overall wellness.
Natural Awakenings: What specific services does Green World Home Cleaning provide?
Peter Newton: If it’s in your house, we take pride in cleaning it! GWHC encompasses a wide range of services, from a deep clean service – including baseboards, A/C grills, light switches, door frames, etc. – to a general service, where we scrub and sanitize kitchen sinks and bathrooms – including the toilets, bathtubs and showers. Plus, we thoroughly dust knick knacks, shelves, windowsills and furniture, vacuum carpets, and wipe down kitchen appliances, counter and stove tops, and cabinets.
Moreover, each team carries a job sheet with customized notes, specific to every home they clean. But, again, we’re flexible. Upon email request, we will also clean the inside of your oven, refrigerator or cabinets – all of which can be included on a rotation basis in order to keep the same allocated time and price, depending on which areas don’t require attention until our next visit.
NA: How do you practice green initiatives, and what fuels your passion for promoting an eco-friendly community?
Newton: Our professional ethos is simple – we strive to provide a home cleaning service that helps to keep your house both spotless and environmentally friendly.
For many years, home cleaning has been perceived as a chore, which has to be done, but ever since the discovery of germs and bacteria and the invention of cleaning products, life-expectancy has improved over time. So, if you then take the toxicity element out of this equation, the environment in which you work, live and play will likewise enhance the health of its occupants even further. Since the average person spends 85% of his/her time indoors, we are passionate about doing our part to promote a healthier living environment overall.
NA: What types of non-toxic products do you use, and how do they positively impact both health and the environment?
Newton: Unsurprisingly, eco-friendly cleaning is a rapidly growing sector within the cleaning industry. Manufacturers are now starting to catch up with this growing demand, hence why you’re probably beginning to see a wide range of “green products” on the shelves at your local store. GWHC has noticed that many of our customers use the Seventh Generation range of non-fragrant (Free & Clear) products, – as we do! – which is always encouraging to see.
In addition, GWHC uses Green Seal-certified products, which are highly effective and recommended by the EPA. For instance, Clean by Peroxy is a hydrogen peroxide-based solution, which is a unique, multi-purpose Green Seal-certified cleaner. For the task at hand, Peroxy gets the job done and leaves no toxic fumes or residue behind. Then, we have the Green Solutions Neutral Disinfectant Cleaner, which is a neutral Ph quaternary disinfectant, considered to be “environmentally friendlier” by the EPA.
Also, our vacuums meet The Carpet & Rug Institute’s (CRI) “Green Label” requirements. To meet this standard, vacuums must be able to capture 96% of particles 0.3 microns in size and operate with less than 70 dBa (decibels A, B) sound levels and use a multi-stage or High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) filtration system.
Plus, the mainstay of our business is the microfiber material we use for mopping, dusting and everyday cleaning jobs. Microfiber technology is more effective than regular cloths or paper towels. It traps more dust, dirt and bacteria than most conventional products, while using up to 95% less chemicals and water for substantial cost savings and greener cleaning. However, for those stubborn stains, marks or spots, – especially in the oven – we find there is still nothing better than the “tried and tested” baking soda and elbow grease. Cleaning with vinegar is also hard to beat.
NA: How do you educate customers on eliminating toxins and air-pollutants in their homes?
Newton: There’s no better way than by example! When a new customer or long-term client comes home from work to a house that’s been professionally cleaned without the use of toxic chemicals, our job is done.
Mind you, however, this is a tough business when it comes to keeping everyone happy. So, we always welcome feedback from our clients, – good or bad – as it’s the best way to improve our services for the betterment of everyone concerned.
NA: Do you currently offer any incentives or discounts for potential new customers?
Newton: As well as placing 10%-off coupons in various local magazines, we also reward referrals from our existing clients with a 50% discount once the new client has completed his/her third visit.
