Mindfulness for Kids and Families
Feb 25, 2016 09:47PM
On Saturday mornings, 9 a.m. to noon, Sarasota Mindfulness Institute (SMI) offers mindfulness-based programs geared toward kids and families. Mindfulness gives children access to some of the same techniques that the world’s top athletes, speakers and musicians use to perform at their best under pressure-filled circumstances like test-taking, public speaking, sports, music, peer interactions and family life.
Mindfulness is a particular way of paying attention. It creates space, allowing thoughtful responses to replace impulsive reactions. The benefits include better focus and attention, increased sense of calm, decreased stress and anxiety, improved impulse control, and increased self-awareness and compassion.
There are similar programs throughout the country, teaching these skills to children from kindergarten through high school. A first grader enrolled in one of these programs reports that mindfulness “makes my brain happy so I can learn better.” SMI offers Qigong, Laughter Yoga, and MindTime Kids which follows the curriculum of Mindful Schools, a program based in California whose work has appeared on the PBS special Room to Breathe.
These classes will take place from April 2–May 21. Qigong is from 9–9:45 a.m., Laughter Yoga is from 10–10:30 a.m., and MindTime Kids is from 10:45–11: 45 a.m. These classes are available on a drop-in basis, but please try to RSVP.
Location: 1530 Dolphin St., Studio 6, Sarasota. Cost for Qigong and MindTime Kids: $10/class; purchase 5 classes, get one free; save $5/class for additional family member. Cost for Laughter Yoga: donation only. For more information, call 941-539-6729, email [email protected], or visit SarasotMindfulness.org and MindTimeKids.com.
