Lessons of Grief & Mortality Lecture and Workshop Series
The C.G. Jung Society of Sarasota is hosting noted authors Elaine Mansfield and Jean Benedict Raffa, Ed.D. who will present on “The Lessons of Grief and Mortality: Loss as an Initiation into Self” and “Journey into the Underworld: Ancient Myth as Contemporary Guide.” This lecture and workshop, respectively, will take place on March 11, 7–9 p.m., and March 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The lecture will explore how to face our own mortality, as well as that of our loves ones. Mansfield and Raffa will explain how conscious interaction between our inner and outer worlds transforms suffering and loss into an initiation into our deepest selves.
During the workshop, participants will delve into the story of Inanna, the Sumerian queen of heaven and earth. This illustration can provide guidance for our psychological descents including grief after a loss of someone or something we love, depression or facing our mortality. Through readings, discussion, ritual, creative exercises and writing, Mansfield and Raffa will lead participants in a seven-step journey of descent and return.
Location: Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota, 3975 Fruitville Rd., Sarasota. Cost for lecture: $15 (C.G. Jung Society members), $20 (non-members).
