Detoxification: A Key in Preventing Dis-Ease

One of the key buzzwords we’ve been hearing on a daily basis, thus far in 2016, is “detox.” Detox your mind. Detox your body. Detox your spirit. But, what does all this detoxing mean? More importantly, what exactly should we detox from in the first place?

Detoxification is a process to rid the body of toxic or unhealthy substances. In our modern world, we are exposed to toxins through multiple channels including the environment, foods and beverages, detrimental relationships and even our favorite beauty products. Toxins are everywhere and nearly impossible to avoid, so the question remains, how do we find balance? The answer is to detox ourselves.

So, what are we accomplishing through detoxification? From a prevention perspective, eliminating undesirable and unwanted substances, thoughts and energies will help create a more positive and optimal life. The list of “stuff” we need to detox from is constantly growing. At the top are everyday items—inflammatory foods like sugar and dairy, chemicals in the water, pesticides and even the air, our perfumes and body lotions, for example

Beyond what goes into the body, there are other types of toxins we are exposed to daily as well—radio waves from cell phones, toxic relationships and the worst, our personal inner critic. Negative thoughts and energy can wreak havoc on both the body and mind. Below are some suggestions on how you can get started detoxing multiple aspects of your life.

For the Body:

  • Visit an infrared sauna to sweat your toxins out.

  • Follow an elimination diet to cleanse inflammatory food build-up.

  • Try a coffee enema to increase your glutathione production, while decreasing your toxic load.

  • Exercise and move your physical body to sweat the toxins out.

  • Undergo systemic cellular detoxification because your colon isn’t the only area that toxins invade.

  • Take a break from fragrances—you don’t have to wear them every day.

For the Mind:

  • Meditate to calm your mind and create peace in the midst of chaos—join a group, using guided meditation recordings, or take a mindfulness class.

  • Identify your inner critic and find ways to quiet that destructive voice.

  • Hit pause on the negative exposure—avoid watching the news or reading the newspaper and unsubscribe from news notifications for at least 15 days.

  • Disengage from social media distractions for a few weeks.

 For the Energy Fields:

  • Avoid using Bluetooth headsets.

  • Limit your use of cell phones and do not sleep with them in your bedroom.

  • Unfriend (in real life) individuals who sap your energy and leave you feeling drained.

  • Cultivate a circle of friends who support, love and accept you unconditionally

  • Take a daily break from all forms of technology.

  • Head outdoors and spend some restorative time amongst nature.

It occurs to me that, in this contemporary life we’re unavoidably exposed to, humans have become completely disconnected with nature. Through this disconnect, we have forgotten that we too are nature. Therefore, we must recharge ourselves, and the simplest way to do this is to go outside. Even sitting in the sun for 15 minutes would do the trick—provided, you take an electronic break as well. Being mindful and enjoying nature is an amazing experience.

I am reminded of a Nature Cure class I took during my doctoral residency program in Austin, Texas. We jumped into a fresh spring then were wrapped up in white sheets and wool blankets up to our necks. We laid directly upon a grassy knoll with our heads pointed toward our personal Feng Shui Gua directions. In time and with increased mindfulness, I became reconnected to the trees, birds, wind and sky. It was a wonderful experience, and I had never felt so completely connected to my natural surroundings before. I encourage you to experience the same.
