Practical Skincare Basics 101

Dec 31, 2016 04:55PM

by Nancy Brown, Licensed Esthetician at Four Pillars

Do you have a drawer or cabinet full of skin care products that you aren’t satisfied with don’t even know how to use properly? You are not alone, but the New Year is an optimal time to reset intentions with your skincare regimen.

As an esthetician, I often hear clients complaining about their dissatisfaction with some of the products they use––most of which are over-the-counter purchases they bought based on buzzwords and claims from an advertisement or commercial. I hear stories of breakouts, dryness and irritation with one common theme––the products just didn’t deliver on those claims.

The revenue of the skincare industry throughout 2016 has been estimated to reach over 62 billion dollars in the U.S., and about 30% is generated from the individual sale of products. Based on the money spend, people want results, but education on the use of products and which ingredients work for each skin type is essential.

I have found that a lack of information is available regarding which effectively treat which skin issues, as well as the misconception regarding what ingredients are needed for a particular skin type.  For example, a person in their twenties does not require what a person in their forties might. This is a basic concept, but more specifics are involved to yield the desired results.

There are a number of factors an esthetician must consider when assessing skin types and needs including dryness, oil, wrinkles and creasing, age, lifestyle, scarring, hyperpigmentation/sunspots, elasticity, sensitivity, acne/breakouts, allergies and more. Once these issues have been assessed, along with the client’s goals, an appropriate treatment is recommended with products to effectively treat, correct and maintain optimal skin health. It’s also important to understand key ingredients found in products and how they help the skin. You likely hear buzzwords all the time, but do you really know what they do, and whether they are beneficial for you?

On February 2, 7–9 p.m., come to Four Pillars for a free skincare workshop and learn about different ingredients like Alpha- and Beta-Hydroxy Acids, Hyaluronic Acid, Peptides, Retinoids and Vitamin C, just to name a few. Learn about a daily care regimen and receive a free skin analysis. Enjoy a treatment demonstration, then receive a free gift and special discounts for attending. Discover which treatments and products can help you achieve radiant, healthy and glowing skin.

Workshop space is limited, so register by calling 941-373-3955.
