Living in Control with Diabetes Type 2

Oct 30, 2017 07:25PM

by Christina Captain, DAOM, MSAOM, MSHN, MA

I am diabetic, according to the numbers. I have lived with this label for at least two decades, maybe more. There are no pharmaceutical drugs in my daily routine––only proper nutrition, quality supplements and consistent exercise. And still, I have diabetes.

Before I took control of my health, my life was miserable. I experienced a seemingly endless cycle of high energy then fatigue, mood swings and chronic gut pain. Food was my lifeline, but too much, too little or the wrong kind resulted in devastating symptoms. I have found there is a fantasy about curing type 2 diabetics. That fantasy consists of losing weight and eliminating carbohydrates, then magically, you’re not diabetic anymore. Been there, done that, found no magic.  The reality is that some people, like me, struggle with diabetes type 2 and insulin resistance forever. However, this is not a death sentence, and you don’t need to progress to the point of requiring medication or insulin.

As a practicing healthcare provider since 2000, I have facilitated many pre-diabetics to reverse the trend of their metabolisms. All the techniques and strategies that you will read about in this November publication are the same ones I utilize in my practice and use to help myself––clean eating with minimal whole grains (not wheat based), low carbohydrates, no processed sugars, exercise meditation and yoga. Yes, I am still human. And yes, I do indulge in dark chocolate and wine––just in moderation.

No one speaks about us, those living in control. Diabetics are either on medication and insulin, or they are reversed to normal. I am living in control with diabetes type 2, and I refuse to worry about not being on medication or attempting to reverse my disease. It is extremely helpful to have experienced what my patients experience, as this allows for a resonance and bond that facilitates a greater amount of success in treatment. Do not be ashamed of a cheat now and then. you must live free, unencumbered by severe restrictions. You can function and thrive with this disease, while staying in control of it. Trust me, I know.
