Letter from the Publisher September 2018

Aug 31, 2018 11:39PM

Hello, readers! September is officially recognized as National Yoga Month by the Department of Health & Human Services, and in this issue, we are thrilled to bring more awareness and emphasis to the benefits of this restorative, healing practice. Here on the Suncoast, yoga is an intrinsic part of our wellness culture, and its mind-body-spirit connection has guided many people in our community toward better health and inner peace. So join us this month as we celebrate yoga studios, teachers and practitioners—both locally and beyond!

Our feature article for this issue is “Natural Approaches to Joint Health,” and yogis of all experience levels can attest to the strengthening impact yoga can have on the joints. These gentle movements and grounding postures reduce stiffness and enhance mobility for improved function, both on the mat and in life. Other natural approaches this article touches on include weight-lifting, running, biking, swimming, tai chi exercises, acupuncture, prolotherapy, meditation, plant-based nutrition and prebiotic supplements.

The yoga festivities continue with this month’s “Fit Body” article on the topic of “Yoga for Flexibility” which features a roundup of the most accessible poses for creating balance and flexibility. Lifelong practitioners and first-time novices alike can benefit from the body-stretching exercises and mind-centering rituals this therapeutic intervention has to offer. The result is both physical and mental flexibility to deepen your practice further.

Yoga and meditation are often complements of each other, and our “Healing Ways” article focuses on how to “Meditate to Music.” This spiritual discipline can be the ideal accompaniment to a yoga sequence or a soothing way to relax and unwind after the practice is over. Some effective meditation techniques include mantras and chants, singing affirmations, vocal toning and controlled breathing, among others. Whether combined with yoga or engaged on its own, meditation is a powerful exercise for a more rooted life.

As usual, these are just a few examples of all the wisdom, insight and enjoyment you will discover tucked inside our September issue. Please send your comments, questions or feedback to [email protected]. And we hope to catch you rolling out the yoga mat and getting your downward dog on this month!
