My Personal Crusade to Make Real and Safe Anti-Aging Products
Myth: If it’s for sale at a supermarket, drugstore or department store cosmetic counter, it must be safe.
Fact: The Food and Drug Administration has no authority to require companies to test cosmetics products for safety. The agency does not review or approve the vast majority of products or ingredients before they go on the market. FDA conducts pre-market reviews only of certain cosmetics color additives and active ingredients that are classified as over-the-counter drugs (FDA 2005, 2010).
Myth: The government prohibits the use of all dangerous chemicals in personal care products, and companies wouldn’t risk using them.
Fact: With the exception of color additives and a few prohibited substances, cosmetic companies may use any ingredient or raw material in their products without government review or approval (FDA 2005). Whereas the European Union has banned more than 1,000 ingredients from use in cosmetics, the FDA has only prohibited the following (FDA 2000a):
- Chlorofluorocarbon propellants
- Halogenated salicylanilides (di-, tri-, metabromsalan and tetrachlorosalicylanilide)
- Methylene chloride
- Vinyl chloride
- Zirconium-containing complexes
- Prohibited cattle materials (including material from non-ambulatory cattle, material from cattle not inspected, and passed and mechanically separated beef).
Myth: If a cosmetic or personal care product is labeled “organic,” it is required to have the ingredients be 90% organic, like foods labeled organic.
Fact: The FDA requires that a cosmetic or personal care product labeled “organic” only have 7% of its ingredients be organic.
My name is Dr. Anna Baker, and I am a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, practicing in Sarasota since 1998. Before that, I worked as a research and development engineer, and was awarded 21 patents for my work in aerospace technology. Unfortunately, I became sensitized to chemicals and had to leave that career to retrain in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Due to my chemical sensitivity, I had to become extremely aware of what was in the products that I used. So, when a pearl cream that I was getting from China gave myself and my patients an allergic reaction, I decided to make my own. In Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna, I use real pearls and Chinese herbs and, most importantly, no preservatives. I also found that the use of preservatives in commercial pearl creams had destroyed the pearl’s legendary muscle tightening abilities which slowly return the youthful appearance to the face and body.
The other anti-aging products on the market are all made with chemicals that are usually causing some sort of micro-injury to the skin, making it respond with collagen and other biochemical repair products that temporarily puff out the area. There is no long-term study on the risks of daily injury to the skin. Other anti-aging products use untested agents like stem cells or growth hormones which have no long term studies on the potential side effects. Doctors warn us not to get sunburns, but they condone the use of all these chemically laden personal products.
Pearls have been used throughout history as an ancient beauty elixir in Egypt, Greece and China because of their therapeutic flesh generating properties. Medical research has found the legendary benefits of pearls come from unique substances called “signal proteins” which act as messengers by sending out signals that control cellular growth. Signal proteins can stimulate new skin and bone regeneration, as well as enhance skin tissue repair and muscle retightening.
A key feature and benefit of my line of Pearl Cream by Dr. Anna face and body lotions for women and men is that there are absolutely no preservatives—preservatives destroy the amino acids properties that tighten the muscle. Also, preservative chemicals are not good for the skin, and can be very toxic to the body. My products are so fresh and healthy, they must be refrigerated.
I have also shown with an extensive photo documentation study that the effects of pearl without preservatives are real and long lasting. Continued use gives an increasingly younger appearance by retightening the muscles gradually over the path they took to age. I show the results at PearlCreambyDrAnna.com, with several before and after photos of users of each product, and it’s clear that each product refreshes the skin and improves skin and muscle quality.
I have continued my quest to make safer personal care products by launching my “Truly Organic” line this year. The line includes facial cleanser, shampoo and lip gloss so far. The products are food-grade organic—not just 7% organic! I will continue my mission to bring organic food grade quality health care products into being.Edit ModuleShow Tags
