Ancient Healing for the Modern Era—That’s How Point Lumineux Treats Medicine

by Mary-Elizabeth Schurrer

Dr. Sera Balderston is not an average physician. From her childhood spent with a healing community in the Poconos Mountains, to her academic studies focusing on biochemistry and molecular biology, to her intrinsic passion for herbal remedies, metaphysical energies and other alternative modalities, Dr. Sera’s depth of knowledge and experience is unmistakable.

It’s that same intense enthusiasm for health and diverse understanding of medicine which has prompted her to establish Point Lumineux, a holistic wellness center in Sarasota that merges ancient restorative wisdom together with modern innovative technologies. Dr. Sera enumerates, “Point Lumineux is a functional medicine practice which includes hormone therapy, nutritional evaluation, IV or injection therapy, and laboratory testing

“As its name suggests, functional medicine works to improve the body’s function, taking a deeper dive into basic fuel needed to optimize the body. To accomplish this purpose, we run laboratory tests on vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, neurotransmitters, hormones, gastroinstinal health and more. We also offer natural approaches to anti-aging and beauty such as platelet rich plasma (PRP) facials, CoolsSulpting, Botox and filler injection procedures.

Given the extensive scope of treatment options, it would also stand to reason that Point Lumineux’s team of practitioners is just as distinct and multifarious in their unique areas of expertise. This bandwidth reflects Dr. Sera’s vision for how a wellness program should be actualized and maintained.

She expounds, “I am an acupuncturist, and one of the medical directors is an osteopathic OB-GYN surgeon. The other medical director is an MD specialist in regenerative medicine, so we integrate Eastern modalities with functional and regenerative medicines. What this means is that we have more tools and protocols in our tool-belts for addressing all kinds of ailments, from the common cold to autoimmune disease and cancer.

When the various components of nutrition, hormone balance, acupuncture, homeopathy, and advanced bloodwork, urinalysis or injection therapies are utilized in conjunction, the result is a fusion of what different medical remedies and philosophies have to offer one another. An example which describes that synthesis is the area of joint health. “Like other impairments in the body, joint disease has multiple causative factors,” Dr. Sera remarks.

Overuse, trauma or injuries, nutrient deficiencies, gastrointestinal and immune dysfunction, or even hormone imbalance contribute to the health of joints. But as functional medicine practitioners, we can determine solutions for all these issues. For instance, both acupuncture and homeopathic Traumeel and Zeel injections reduce inflammation and pain in the joints, as well as promote regeneration if there is any degeneration in the joints.

That is just one illustration of how functional, integrative medicine works to pinpoint the original source of a disease instead of bandaging the external symptoms. It’s not a revolutionary concept, but it has been neglected for centuries in the business boom of Western convention, expedience and accessibility. Dr. Sera’s mission is to restore this profound healing wisdom to a community that she adores.

I love Sarasota for its emphasis on culture, beaches and nature, all within close proximity. I have resided here for 11 years, and I also want to retire here. Our office is conveniently located just off Stickney Point Road near 41 and close to Siesta Key, my favorite beach in the world. Moreover, theSarasota area has a well-educated population of people who are committed to being their own healthcare advocates and taking advantage of the many wellness options we facilitate here at Point Lumineux, she concludes.
