Natural Apothecary Shoppe Offers Berberine Complex for Nutritional Support

Extensive testing has been performed on Berberine. Researchers hypothesize one of the main actions of berberine is to activate an enzyme inside the cells called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is involved in metabolism regulation and energy within the cell. Berberine also affects other molecules in the cells and could even affect which genes are turned “on” or “off.” This, in turn, could help support many chronic health conditions.

As berberine passes into the blood slowly, some returns to the intestine by a carrier called P-glycoprotein, which makes absorption more difficult. With the help of gut bacteria (which make the enzyme nitroreductase), berberine converts into Dihydroberberine (DHB), a form that can rapidly pass into the blood. DHB is then quickly converted back to berberine where it is absorbed by the tissue.

A person with healthy gut microbiota might not have any issues reducing and absorbing berberine, but those who lack optimal gut bacteria might not be able to convert Berberine to DHB. This significantly reduces the effectiveness of berberine absorption and utilization. In this case, it’s ideal to supplement with DHB. Once it absorbs and moves into the tissue, it will be converted back to berberine to optimize health of the tissue.

DHB has five times the absorption rate of berberine, so a much lower dose is required. This makes DHB a safer option. High-dose berberine supplementation has the potential to create toxicity.Dihydroberberine is marketed as Gluco Vantage. DHB can achieve better absorption than the oral ingestion of berberine, whereas traditional berberine can take several months to see results in glucose, insulin and lipid regulation.

The enhanced absorption of dihydroberberine seems to be responsible for faster results. The clinical and nutritional applications for Berberine Complex include weight loss, lower blood sugar and insulin sensitivity management.
