Mindfulness for a Better You

Jan 01, 2019 02:27AM

As you enter the New Year, there is an opportunity to start over again and become more effective and successful in different areas of your life. The practical self-awareness skills of yoga, referred to as mindfulness, can greatly influence your success to accomplish plans, goals, solutions and desired outcomes in all your endeavors.

Mindfulness requires that you slow down to notice and acknowledge the present moment as you experience feelings, thoughts, sensations and physiological reactions in order to have the presence and freedom of mind to choose healthy, positive and effective responses, instead of the first habitual reactions that often jump to mind.

Every situation in life presents opportunities to practice being mindful, and research confirms that mindfulness practices improve management of stress, cardiac and stroke risks, immunity and longevity, quality of sleep, psychological and physical health, creativity, decision-making, relationships, calmness and resiliency to unavoidable pressures or challenges.

“Keep calm and carry on” or “being Zen” are perhaps the most well-known mindfulness associations, but mindfulness is, in fact, a developed mental state strengthened through the yoga of concentrated effort, purposeful intention, frequent challenge and committed practice.

Sarasota’s Empowered 2 Wellness Yoga Therapy at Midtown Medical Plaza announces weekly coaching in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy for enhanced biopsychosocial health and overcoming lifestyle obstacles. On January 10, Certified-IAYT Yoga Therapist Paula Morris will address this topic to Manatee Memorial Hospital’s breast cancer support group, starting at 5:30 p.m., in Bradenton.
