Yoga Therapy's Whole Approach is Help for Crisis Time

by Paula Morris

In times when we may feel the overwhelming reality of our vulnerability and helplessness, yoga therapy is a multi-dimensional method to help us manage and recover from crisis.

It is a mind-body alternative  the Surgeon General in 2018 recommended to become a “first-line treatment” for mental and physical pain based on decades of research  confirming mind-body interventions superior in  long-term effectiveness when compared to patients receiving only medications, surgery, exercise, or physical therapy.  One Harvard Medical study reported practitioners of therapeutic yoga had 43% fewer visits to hospitals in one year than people who did not practice yoga’s whole wellness approach.

Yoga Therapy effectively strengthens biophysical- psychosocial-spiritual resiliency.  Physical exercise is only one part of yoga. Its other life-enhancing practices address what is most needed in crisis:

Mindfulness to life choices and the importance of supportive self-care and safety for the whole.

Exercises to strengthen lungs, heart, and breathing capacity and conserve vital body resources.

Resting of the sensory organs to overstimulation. Focus of the mind.

Meditation to transform anxiety into healthy responses, problem-solving actions, and immunity.

Daily practices individualized and integrated into our unique lives for deeper connection in life.

Key effects on anxiety, depression, loss, self-efficacy, and health as published by NIH:

induces deep calm reflexes to the mind and body necessary for health, sleep, and recovery

increases sensory proprioception to when imbalance is triggered

increases attention span and focus so function and control over oneself is improved

enhances self-acceptance and adaptability so people choose better habits and lifestyles

empowers a personal sense of stability independent of favorable events or others

Learn what you can do to be ready, resilient, and equipped with the resources to recover.

Right now most of us are experiencing the overwhelming pains of “coronavirus”.  Anxiety prescriptions are reported to have increased 34% between Feb and March alone.  Fear is rampant.  Beyond the viral threat that may compromise breathing and heart function,  potential trauma is being experienced in our bodies, minds, and souls on many, and sometimes every, level of our former lives. Immunity is weakened by any deficits in our physical, mental, social, economic, and spiritual strength.  Social distancing may have halted much of the lifestyle that formerly provided relief and security.
