Natural Awakenings Sarasota / Manatee / Charlotte

Letter From Publisher June 2023

Last month at Natural Awakenings, the focus was on women’s wellness. But this time around, we’re turning it over to the men—and rightfully so, since June is National Men’s Health Month. From nutrition and fitness, to parenting and finances, to hormone balance and sexual function, it’s all here within these pages. So join me for an insider’s peek into this issue!

First on the docket, our feature article for this month is all about “Sexual Vitality at Every Age.” In today’s healthcare landscape, it’s becoming more normalized—or at least, less stigmatized—for men to openly discuss their sexual health with medical professionals. But while the topic is no longer taboo, many men still face questions around how to maintain a robust libido, strong performance and sheer enjoyment, even as they grow older. Fortunately, new advancements, along with holistic interventions, make it so much easier to treat the various physical, hormonal, neurological, mental and interpersonal factors that influence sexual wellness.

Next, we’ll turn our attention to “Socially Conscious Investing,” a subject that feels particularly relevant in the midst of so much economic upheaval. This year, the NASDAQ reported that environmental, social and governance (ESG) investments account for more than $8 trillion in U.S. assets, and that number is projected to exceed $50 trillion on a global scale by 2025. So what exactly does this mean? When it comes to building a portfolio, more of us are starting to choose stocks or mutual funds that reflect our personal values. We’re investing in companies that stand for equity and inclusion, work to protect the climate, or spread acts of kindness in their spheres of influence. And that’s the whole point of socially conscious investing: to hold corporations accountable and put our money where our ethics are.

Finally, we would be remiss to talk about Men’s Health Month without also mentioning Father’s Day. Some men believe they need to work long hours to financially provide for their families and give their children material comforts or memorable experiences. But for kids, it’s not about taking an exotic vacation or receiving new toys—the most valuable childhood memories are built on quality time spent together. In this issue’s “Healthy Kids” article, we’ll dive into how fathers can embrace their roles as emotionally present, intentional, hands-on parents to form meaningful connections with their children in the ways that leave an impact.

As always, I appreciate you for taking this dive with me into all the enlightenment that awaits inside this issue. Summer is officially here, which means there’s no better time to nourish your wellness and embrace life at its fullest. And on that note, I hope to see you right back here next month as we continue those abundant summertime vibes all season long!
