Functional Medicine: A Root-Cause Approach to Real Healing

Jun 30, 2025 09:31AM ● By Dr. Fred Harvey

When some folks enter my practice for the first time, they often come with frustrations—and rightfully so. Many of them have seen specialists, taken prescriptions, or undergone procedures, but they still can’t find relief. That’s where functional medicine comes in.

What Is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is ultimately about asking better questions than a surface-level inquiry of, “What are the symptoms, and which medications can help manage them?” Instead, functional medicine practitioners ask, “What are the root causes of these symptoms, and how can they be resolved at the source?” Whether the issue is fatigue, chronic pain, brain fog, or autoimmune dysfunction, these aren’t random symptoms—they’re signals of a deeper health concern underneath. The body talks, and functional medicine teaches us how to listen.

Functional medicine is systems-based, meaning that it connects the dots between environment, lifestyle, genetics, emotions, and biology. Functional medicine looks at the whole person, not isolated parts, to create a holistic treatment plan beyond an initial diagnosis.

The Functional Medicine Philosophy: Don’t Fix People, Help Them Heal

Healing is not an outcome that’s done to you. It’s a process that your own unique body is capable of facilitating with the right conditions. Every human has an innate ability to heal—functional medicine’s role is to help remove the obstacles in the way of this healing.

This means intently listening to a person’s story, running lab tests that other physicians might have overlooked, then locating the toxic load, nutrient deficiencies, and hormonal or microbial imbalances that fuel disease. It also means empowering you with education, resources, and a treatment plan rooted in both science and nature.

Real Healing for Real Human Beings

Over the years of practicing functional medicine, I have walked alongside thousands of folks on their healing journeys. Here are a few stories that continue to stick with me:

  • Maria, in her early 40s, was suffering from total depletion. She had been told these symptoms were from stress or early-onset menopause. However, further examination revealed a combination of adrenal burnout, blood sugar instability, and inflammation. After a few months of changes in her diet, supplements, and lifestyle, she reported feeling like herself once again.

  • James, in his 50s, feared that he was developing early-onset dementia. Conventional tests found nothing, but functional medicine told a different story—mold toxicity, B12 deficiency, and impaired detox pathways. Once these root cases were resolved, both his mental clarity and physical wellness returned.

  • Lily, just 11 years old, suffered from painful eczema that left her embarrassed to attend school. A functional medicine treatment plan examined her gut health, dietary habits, and immune function. In weeks, her skin—and self-confidence—began to heal.

These stories are not miracles. They’re a result of treating the root—not just the branch.

Why Functional Medicine Works

Functional medicine is effective for three core reasons: it’s personalized, it’s proactive, and it respects the intelligence of the human body. If you have been told that your lab results are “normal,” but your lived experience does not reflect this, functional medicine is worth exploring. Functional medicine will not offer you a quick fix—it’s a process and a journey. But healing is a journey worth taking, and you don’t have to walk through it alone.
