Healing the Core: Why Nature Is Powerful Medicine

As a Functional Medicine physician, I often view health differently than more conventional medicine practitioners. Rather than focusing solely on a diagnosis or a disease, I look at the whole person. Every human being is unique, and each health story is influenced by much more than laboratory values and surface-level symptoms.
When most of us think about health, we think about our physical bodies—the heart, brain, hormones, digestion, and countless other systems that keep us alive. These systems are important, but they are not the whole picture. Beneath the physical self lies what I think of as our core: the interconnected relationship between mind, emotions, and spirit.
The mind allows us to perceive and navigate the world around us. Our emotions guide us to what nourishes our well-being and away from what can harm us. Our spirit offers a sense of mission and connection to something more than just ourselves. When these aspects of our being are healthy and stable, they create a foundation for both resilience and vitality. But when they become imbalanced, the entire body feels the effects.
Modern life places tremendous strain on this core. The constant pressures of work, family responsibilities, financial concerns, illness, loss, and the endless twenty-four-hour news cycle can leave us mentally and emotionally exhausted. Even those who are actively working on their health through nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, prayer, or meditation can still suffer the impacts of all these continual stressors.
Sometimes life is simply overwhelming, but one of the most powerful, beneficial forms of restoration is also one of the simplest—reconnecting with nature. Summer presents an ideal opportunity to do just that. Across much of this country, nature is flourishing. Trees and flowers are in bloom, wildlife is active, and the natural world invites us to slow down and immerse ourselves in the nourishment of this planet we share.
Research consistently shows that spending time in nature enhances mood, relieves stress, lowers blood pressure, increases cognitive function, and optimizes well-being. But the benefits extend so much deeper than physiology alone. Nature reminds us that we belong. It reconnects us to the larger ecosystem of which we are a part.
When you spend time outside, I encourage you to do so intentionally. Leave the earbuds at home. Turn off the podcast. Stash the phone in your pocket. Give yourself permission to be fully present. Listen to the wind rustle the trees. Watch the birds. Feel the sun’s warmth and the cadence of your own footsteps. Whether you walk in a forest, along a river, across a prairie, or beside the ocean, experience the scenic environment around you.
Here in Florida, I enjoy walking the beach, but I also find enormous peace in our inland prairies, natural springs, and subtropical forests. Each unique landscape offers its own distinct opportunity for quiet reflection and renewal.
I often tell patients that nature has a way of restoring what modern life often depletes. When we step into these environments, the nervous system begins to settle. Stress hormones decline. Attention broadens. Perspective returns. We remember that we are not separate from this earth—we are an integral part of it. When the mind, emotions, and spirit recover, they help to enhance every other aspect of our health. Sometimes the most powerful medicine isn’t found in a prescription bottle. Sometimes it’s found beneath your feet.
As always, be sure to talk with your healthcare provider before making changes to your current wellness routine. If you want personal guidance, I invite you to schedule a telehealth appointment with me at Functional Medicine Florida. Together, we can create a roadmap to cultivate your healthiest, most vibrant life.
