Instilling Healthy Habits in Our Children
What lessons must children be taught for a healthy life? From kindergarten on, it’s important to help them learn how to nourish and care for the bodies they live in. Children need to know where food comes from, which foods are nutritious for them, and which foods are not. Even in cities, it is possible to grow fruits, herbs, and vegetables from seed to table. This can instill an appreciation for the miracle of life in kids of all ages,
Children can be taught to listen to the messages their bodies constantly send to their brains. Instead of minimizing pain, they can learn to view pain as a distress call and to catch problems before they become significant health risks.
It’s also important to teach children how to enjoy being in their own bodies. Running, dancing, jumping, and moving are all part of embracing a full, abundant life. Play is crucial for development at all stages of childhood.
The world we wish to live in requires that our children understand how to responsibly care for the earth, since it is the foundation of human wellness and existence. Health does not stop at the skin—it encompasses the biosphere and everything in it.
