Does Binge-Watching TV Affect Your Health?

Watching a full season of a show you’re hooked on might seem enjoyable, but did you know that binge-watching can adversely affect your health? Below are four health areas that can be affected which you’ll want to consider the next time you indulge in the latest addition of your preferred streaming service.

 

Difficulty Falling Asleep           

Research shows that binge-watching causes “pre-sleep arousal.” That means physical and mental activity, like a pounding heart rate or intense thinking, can keep you awake because the body and brain often require a cool-down period to process unfolding dramas, complex plots and complicated characters.

 

Fatigue 
The study also shows that difficulty falling asleep after binge-watching can lead to fatigue the next day. According to the National Safety Council, the potential effects of fatigue include depression, obesity, decreased work and unsafe driving.

 

Cardiovascular Disease.

Binge-watching and sitting for long periods of time are also directly correlated with over-eating which can lead to cardiovascular issues or Type 2 diabetes.  

 

Back Pain

Sitting in fixed positions for extended periods can increase your risk of developing lower back pain, particularly when it’s on a couch or chair with less spinal support.

 

To help offset the impacts of binge-watching, UnitedHealthcare’s chief medical officer, Dr. Mayrene Hernandez, offers healthy ideas to implement while enjoying the latest season of your favorite series.

 

  • Workout while you watch.  Position the TV in front of the treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical machine, or simply grab some hand weights exercises. 
  • Take a break. Consider pressing pause on binge sessions with 10-minute breaks to move around and engage the body.
  • Use TV time to stretch. While you’re in front of the TV, practice some basic stretches. Major muscle groups such as the calves, thighs, hips, lower back, neck and shoulders can improve flexibility and the ability to move your joints.
