Glutathione: Your Defense against Toxins

One of the most powerful antioxidants and detoxifiers, glutathione is comprised of three sulfur containing amino acids, and is created inside the body. This molecule is involved in the entire life cycle of each cell.

Glutathione helps the liver to clear out toxins by acting as a glue for toxins to stick to and be eliminated. Glutathione is required to make bile which breaks down dietary fat. It is also essential for cellular redox homeostasis, oxygen transport, DNA protection, amino acid transport, protection of B12 inside the cells and removal of heavy metals.    

In today’s toxic world, we need more glutathione than our bodies can make with the amount of sulfur in our diets, but while everyone needs more glutathione, some are more affected than others. Genetic predispositions like the MTHFR gene mutation cripples the body’s methylation capabilities which process B9, convert homocysteine into methionine and create glutathione. 

This results in deficiencies of B12, B6 and folate, as well as toxic overload, leading to other conditions like chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, liver disease, Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, cardiovascular disease and chronic inflammation. Here is how to increase glutathione levels:

  1. Eat sulfur-rich foods: garlic, onions and cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, collards, cabbage, cauliflower, watercress). You can even blend them into smoothies which is easier for the body to absorb.
  2. Exercise more often: the body needs regular movement in order to be its healthiest.
  3. Take nutrient supplements: some options include acetyl cysteine, alpha-lipoic acid, glutathione, B vitamins, antioxidants like Vitamin C and E, selenium or milk thistle.
  4. Consider glutathione injections and IV therapy: this is ideal for the severely deficient or chronically ill.
