Genetic Testing to Customize your Cannabis Treatment

Oct 31, 2019 11:43AM

When it comes to medical cannabis, we at Point Lumineux utilize plant-based cannabinoids to augment our own circulating cannabinoids (anandamide and 2 AG) to manipulate this system and further improve our own health and wellness. Medicinal plants like cannabis are a unique source of exogenous cannabinoids that promote wellness and help fight disease. Understanding how each unique individual’s endocannabinoid system interacts with cannabis helps us customize treatment recommendations.

Point Lumineux is leading the movement in our area to offer this unique form of genetic testing to facilitate our cannabis recommendations. With a simple cheek swab, we obtain the DNA which is then sent for analysis. We also use a person’s data if they have previously done 23 & Me or Ancestry.com testing. With these results, we can fine-tune their cannabis recommendations and offer a therapeutic advantage. The genetic testing results provide useful information regarding genes, markers, enzymes, receptors, and metabolic pathways, and it is helpful in suggesting optimal cannabis formulations.

The cost of this testing is $199—or $49 if someone has already done ancestral DNA testing. For many, this is a small investment that could make a significant long-term impact. A follow-up visit with the doctor is also required to discuss results and make the appropriate recommendations. “Our mission is to educate the community on the responsible use of cannabis. Now, using genetic testing, we can take the guesswork out of medical marijuana and help our patients even more,” notes Dr. Hoffmeister. For more information, come to our free cannabis educational event on November 7, 5:30 p.m.
