Teen Anxiety in COVID Times: Neurofeedback Could Be the Answer

Does your teen seem more anxious or melancholy than usual? Have you noticed panic attacks, social avoidance or other concerning behaviors for the first time? The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in quarantine measures designed to create safe physical distance in the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, new evidence to these measures potentially causing adverse mental health effects in teens and young adults such as anxiety, depression and loneliness.

An important part of life in these age brackets is social interaction with peers. When this cannot happen regularly due to COVID-19 restrictions, emotional stressors can develop. These symptoms shouldn’t be ignored or written off as typical teen behavior because they could be indicators of urgent emotional health issues that need to be evaluated and addressed as soon as possible. New psychological data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) shows that the nation's mental health is on a decline, particularly for adolescents.

Suicidal thoughts appear to have increased in young people since last year, with as many as one in four people ages 18–24 having seriously considered suicide in the 30 days prior to this June survey. Although eating healthy, being active, sleeping adequately and maintaining social connections are important for maintaining emotional health for teens, these measures are not always enough, especially in teens who were anxious or depressed before the COVID-19 restrictions took place.
