Natural Awakenings Sarasota / Manatee / Charlotte

Letter From the Publisher October 2021

Autumn is back in full-swing, which means hearty seasonal produce from the farmer’s market, festive candles with the warm scent of pumpkin and cool, blustery weather that makes you want to spend as much time outside as possible. This is a season of gratitude, pleasure and reflection on what matters in life. And that’s the theme of this month’s issue: a simple, natural, mindful approach to wellness that can help you finish this year off strong.

Our feature article this month is all about “Living a Simpler Lifestyle” which feels especially meaningful now after two years of shifting priorities and re-examining values in the wake of this pandemic. As our society starts to move in the direction of more conscious, minimalist and sustainable living, it will also clear more space for us to embrace what’s truly important. This is the perfect time to shed what no longer serves you and prioritize what does.

On the subject of simplicity, there’s no exercise more basic than walking, but as our “Fit Body” article points out, it’s also one of the most effective cardio activities you can do. Walking for at least 30 minutes a day can offer numerous wellness benefits such as increased balance, stronger bone density, robust heart and lung function, and positive mental health outcomes. So, if you want to incorporate more body conditioning into your routine, just start walking.

Finally, sometimes the simple life means coming back to our roots, and there’s so much we can learn about this from hunter-gatherer cultures all over the world. This month’s “Wise Words” article delves into how people in the Yucatan, Arctic Circle and Tanzania raise their children and form their communities around collective responsibility and cooperation. Not only is this a much less complicated way to live, but it also nurtures calm and peace of mind.

As usual, this is just a quick snapshot of all the inspiration and enlightenment you’ll find within these pages. So take some time to intentionally savor all the natural beauty this fall season has to offer, and we’ll see you back here next month!
