Natural Awakenings Sarasota / Manatee / Charlotte

Letter From Publisher March 2024

As winter blooms into the radiance of spring, now is the perfect time for a wellness refresh. In this month’s Natural Awakenings issue, we are turning our attention to vibrant, holistic trends in both fitness and nutrition. Think of it as a “spring clean” for your health! So join me as we embrace this new season, full of revitalizing possibilities.

Our feature article for this month dives into some exciting “Trends in Food & Nutrition” that we can expect to gain serious traction in 2024. A couple trends—such as plant-forward eating and sustainably grown foods, for example—have already become more accessible in recent years, while other trends are just starting to leave their mark on the wellness industry. Some of these newcomers include nutritional psychiatry, sleep-targeted snacks, customized longevity protocols, and non-alcoholic beverages, to name a few.

While we’re on the subject of nutrition, this month’s “Conscious Eating” article explores the health benefits of homegrown herbs, both for wholesome cooking and natural healing. Fresh herbs provide essential nutrients to soothe common ailments, while nourishing the body. With flu season still in effect, the importance of quick, easy, affordable access to herbal remedies cannot be overstated. This article also offers practical advice to grow herbs at home—whether in a garden, on a patio, or even in a windowsill.

Another topic of interest in both holistic and conventional wellness circles is the emphasis on healthy gut microbiota. The human intestinal system houses trillions of bacteria that help us digest the nutrients that allow our bodies to perform the many critical functions which keep us alive. In this month’s “Healing Ways” article, we discuss the benefits of colon health through a functional medicine lens. This includes taking steps to reduce inflammation, manage stress, consume foods that help regulate and balance digestion, and repair intestinal lining. All of these actions will help create an environment where gut flora can thrive.

This season is brimming with fresh inspiration and new opportunities, which is exactly what I hope you’ll find within our March issue. As always, it’s such an honor to be part of your holistic wellness journey, and I look forward to seeing you back here in April!
